Today’s word is another of those that you’d never guess if you didn’t already know it. It is sideboard. If you remember that board is an earlier word for ‘table’ (which we borrowed from French), it begins to make more sense. A sideboard is a kind of cupboard found in a dining room and used to store, cutlery, crockery and table linen. Originally, the sideboard probably was just a wooden board to serve food from, and later it grew drawers and cupboards underneath (just as a cupboard was probably just a board with cups hanging on it).
